J. League player slapped on wrist for molesting sleeping woman
A J. League soccer player was handed a suspended sentence on Monday for molesting a woman after she fell asleep at his apartment.
The Tokyo District Court said that Sandro Cardos Dos Santos, a 24-year-old player with JEF United Ichihara Chiba, dined with a woman on May 23 last year and later took her to his apartment in Ichihara.
He then molested her after she fell asleep. The court sentenced him to 10 months in prison, suspended for three years.
"He molested the woman who was asleep in a vicious crime," Judge Takehiko Okada said. "It was a selfish crime, but he showed regret and reached a settlement with her."
The judge told Santos, who was born in Brazil, "Never do it again. Please try hard at soccer."
A JEF United spokesman said that the club would suspend the player for an unspecified period and was discussing the possibility of having him carry out social welfare activities. (Mainichi and wire reports, Japan, Feb. 7, 2005
