"Shigeru Oohori (a pseudonym) is a 35-year-old 'elite salaryman' at a major corporation and loving father of a 10-year-old daughter. He's also a dedicated chikan (groper) who gets his thrills running his hands over the bodies of young women on commuter trains. Five years ago, Oohori was posting messages on an Internet bulletin board set up for aficionados of train groping. (Example: 'Today, I got my hands on a girl with a big ass...') and proposed that his fellow correspondents get together for drinks... 'We had Buddhist priests, school principals, government bureaucrats, doctors and others,' he relates. This initial encounter led to the formal establishment of the Chikan Tomo-no-Kai (The Gropers' Brotherhood), whose membership currently numbers 50 nationwide, and of which Oohori serves as chairman... 'Groping was once a solitary activity, but now thanks to the Internet it's become easy to link up with people who share the same kind of sexual interests,' enthuses Oohori. 'We swap information. This nurtures a sense of competition and spurs us to bolder activities. Another purpose of our group is to warn members from getting so carried away they risk arrest.'" — Mainichi Daily News (Japan)

These gropers don't kid around. Though telling fish stories is a significant part of their monthly sessions, they don't just stop at telling tall tales of their exploitative exploits. They also give informal lectures on the latest groping techniques — for example, at a recent meeting one groper shared his method for "perforating girls' pantyhose in order to get closer to the land of milk and honey." Even more incredibly, they even arrange training sessions. They hire a few girls to ride commuter trains, then watch each other practice groping. Afterward, they meet and criticize each other's techniques. Especially good groping performances even result in "belts" based on the karate system, so that a great groper can aspire to a black belt in illicit touching.

Presumably these training sessions must appeal to the "technician" groper, one of two categories the brotherhood claims most gropers belong to. These technicians aim at "subtly titillating the woman using practiced erotic techniques that succeed in getting her wet before she even realizes what's happening." It's a weird premise, since it's hard to imagine women don't realize a man has his fingers in her panties on the morning commute. Perhaps it is not a matter of the women failing to realize what's going on but rather deciding how much to tolerate before making a scene (since of course different women will tolerate and, on the rare occasion, even enjoy different amounts of groping).

Apparently these technician types are the elite gropers, comprising only an estimated twenty percent of chican. The majority of gropers, according to the brotherhood, are the "orthodox" type, "who become excited by seeing the expression of disgust on a girl's face at the moment they begin running their hands over her body." That's a weird premise too, since it's hard to imagine that the look of repulsion is the exciting thing when you've got your hands on a breast or an ass. After all, if you just wanted to disgust a girl on the subway, you could always pee on her shoes or slip a frog down the front of her shirt. Maybe there are online brotherhoods for those kinds of creeps too.
