Review of the story of "J" by Kenzaburo Oe
I recently finished reading the above mentioned story, and here's my take on it. First, the story comes in two parts. In part one, which is 61 pages long and makes no mention of chikan, the writer tells of J's background. He is the son of the president of a steel company. You learn of J's failed marriages, his infidelity, and something of his sexual inclinations.
In part two, which is 55 pages long, Oe tells of how J became a chikan, how he befriended other chikans, and about his struggle with deciding whether to choose to remain a deviant versus conforming to society. The book is interesting, but don't be thinking it's something that will get you excited about doing chikan. However, if you are interested in a more intellectual approach to the topic of chikan, and if you can appreciate good literature, then perhaps the story is worth reading. I'm glad I read it.
