You are quite right, Shadow: "Each to his own" as I too have said before. What I said about high risk behaviour was meant not as a comment on other people's practice, but a response to someone who said my story could not be true because what I did was too incautious.

I don't normally answer armchair theoreticians and non-contributing critics; maybe I should just have left him alone. Anyway, part of me is always flattered when people tell me that things I have done are impossible.

To answer your question: You are exactly right in what you surmise about the technique: you do not make big movements to attract attention to yourself, and if you have a shoulder-strap bag that comes down to your waist, that can be used to provide cover.

If you read the article on the LAPD crackdown you will see that it does not say how many of the people caught were arm-humpers or butt-humpers. It says that a certain number of people were caught on the bus and subway and gives one example which happens to be an arm-humper.

Anyway, there is no safe form of this business and I never suggested that there was. I was just responding, against my better judgement, to someone who sounded like an inactive critic commenting from the sidelines.
