NY info for gentelbrush

The subway is safe everywhere in Manhattan, with the possible exception of above about 100th street, where you don't need to go anyway, and even there is probably safe. Bill Clinton's office is there now. But everywhere in lower manhattan, which is where the crowds are anyway, is fine. The subways in New York are really quite safe now, so long as it's not late at night in the outer reaches. The danger has become anthrax, not muggers.

The 1 and 9 lines (which are the same line in manhattan) are great around 42nd street / Grand Central heading uptown. You stand there, the express comes on one track, the local on another, and you're in between, watching for lovely prey and packed situations. The front of the train is best.

Or the E or F at the Lexington Ave stop. It's unreal. The place is packed, with an escalator absolutely overflowing bringing ever more people down, but that's not enough, the stairs are packed with them coming down as well. The E seems to be more crowded, but just stand there and watch for a while. In one direction, these go west into Manhattan, in the other they enter Queens. That first stop in Queens is definitely fine as far as safety goes.

This advice is all during evening rush hour. 4:45 to 6:00. I've never done the mornings; if you experiment, let me know what you find out.
